Coursera gives Texas State an Outstanding Achievement Award for its Career Academy

Coursera has given Texas State University an Outstanding Achievement Award for its Coursera Career Academy initiative — the programme that brings industry-recognised professional certificates into the undergraduate experience itself.
The award recognises the university for turning a voluntary, co-curricular option into a campus-wide strategy that connects students, faculty and staff with flexible online learning aligned to high-demand workplace skills.
What the award is for
Coursera cited learner engagement and the way Texas State built a coordinated ecosystem rather than simply buying access to an online platform and leaving it there. That ecosystem spans students, faculty, staff, university leadership, media outreach, curriculum integration and advocacy from Student Government.
Texas State’s Coursera Career Academy initiative demonstrates what is possible when career readiness becomes an integrated part of the student experience. By connecting students’ academic interests and majors with employer-valued skills and credentials, we are helping prepare Bobcats not only for their first opportunity after graduation, but for lifelong learning and career advancement.

Why this is worth something to an international student
This is one of the few "academic innovation" stories with a concrete, measurable effect on international students.
When you apply for internships or for post-graduation work on OPT, you compete with domestic students — people whose employers never have to think about visas. You need something on the other side of the ledger. A degree plus industry-issued professional certificates is a specific difference on a CV, particularly for technical, data and analytics roles.
A complement, not a substitute
A professional certificate does not replace a degree, and it does not create work authorisation. It makes the file stronger.
Choose by field
Certificates count when they line up with your major and your target role — not by quantity.
Start early
Spreading them across semesters is easier than stacking them in final year, when OPT paperwork is also due.
