The two Texas campuses
These are the two places an F-1 student physically attends.
San Marcos — the main campus
The original campus, between Austin and San Antonio in the Texas Hill Country, on the banks of the San Marcos River. Almost every bachelor’s program, the residence halls, libraries, labs and student life are here. If you picture "studying in the United States" in the usual sense, this is it.
Round Rock — north of Austin
About an hour north of San Marcos, serving the fast-growing Austin metro. The university lists more than 30 degree programs here, including the St. David’s School of Nursing. Fall 2026 enrollment reached 4,003, up 37% on the previous record. Electrical Engineering opens here in Fall 2027.
The other options
All real, but worth understanding before you build a plan around them.
Querétaro, México
A campus in México, which the university describes as extending its reach and creating an environment designed to help students become global leaders. It is not a destination on a U.S. student visa.
Online programs
Study from anywhere; fully online enrollment reached 6,121 in Fall 2026, up 54%. Suited to working professionals or people already in the U.S. on another status — see the visa note below.
Community college pathways
A guaranteed transfer program with Austin Community College ("Bats to Cats") plus co-enrollment with other community colleges. Fall 2026 brought 3,571 new transfer students; Texas State is among the top 25 U.S. universities for attracting transfers.
What matters most for international students: your study mode decides your visa
An F-1 visa is tied to full-time, in-person study at the university’s U.S. campus. A fully online program does not normally give the university a basis to issue an I-20, and does not maintain F-1 status. On community college pathways the I-20 is issued first by the college, and the SEVIS record transfers to Texas State once you meet the transfer requirements.
