What to pack

Mostly summer/fall clothes

T-shirts, jeans, sneakers — worn 8–9 months a year. Clothing is cheap in the U.S., especially at the San Marcos outlets, so pack only the basics.

One warm jacket is enough

Plus a hoodie or cardigan for short cold snaps. No heavy down coat needed as in the northern U.S.

Sun protection is essential

Sunglasses, hat and sunscreen — the UV index in Texas is high even in autumn.

Swimwear + light rain jacket

The river and pools are part of student life; spring showers are heavy but brief.

Severe weather and alerts

Central Texas is outside the coastal hurricane zone that affects Houston, and tornadoes mostly hit North Texas. The main risks are heavy spring rain causing local flooding and sudden winter cold fronts. TXST sends SMS/email through TXState Alert whenever weather is dangerous or campus closes — sign up in your first week.

Summer tip: exercise outdoors early morning or late afternoon and always carry water. Winter tip: cold snaps last only 2–3 days — check the forecast before buying extra warm clothes.

Frequently asked questions

Does it snow in Texas?

Snow is rare in San Marcos — once every few years, and it usually melts the same day.

How hot does summer get?

Many days above 35°C and peaks over 38°C. Every building, bus and shop is air-conditioned, and students head to the river to cool off.

Is pollen a problem?

Spring and late winter (cedar fever) bring high pollen. If you are sensitive, bring your usual allergy medication or buy it at a U.S. pharmacy.

Does weather disrupt classes?

Very rarely. Campus only closes when ice makes travel dangerous — announced through TXState Alert.
