International applicants should treat the priority date as the real deadline. After admission you still need the I-20, a visa appointment and housing — the final deadline leaves too little time for those steps in many countries. Graduate deadlines vary by program; check the deadlines page.

The process, step by step

  1. Pick the program. Level, major and — for graduate applicants — the specific department, since requirements differ.
  2. Gather documents. Official transcripts (with certified English translations), proof of graduation, an English score, and for graduate programs a CV, statement and references where required.
  3. Apply online and pay $90. The fee is non-refundable and there are no waivers for international applicants. Files are reviewed only once it is paid.
  4. Track the decision, then request the I-20. Provide a passport copy and financial documentation covering the cost of attendance.
  5. Pay the SEVIS fee and book the F-1 interview. Then arrange housing and arrival before orientation.
