STEM Programs and 3-Year OPT: An Advising Guide for Partners

"Can my child work in the United States after graduating?" is the question behind most enquiries, even when families ask about rankings instead. Understanding the STEM and OPT framework lets your counsellors answer it accurately.
What OPT is
Optional Practical Training is temporary work authorisation related to a student's field of study. Graduates of programmes designated as STEM may be eligible for an extension, giving up to three years in total. This is a national framework administered under United States immigration rules, not a university benefit — so eligibility depends on the programme's designation and on the student maintaining status.
Where to look at Texas State University
Across more than 200 degree programmes, the subject areas that most often attract internationally mobile students include:
- Computer science and information systems
- Engineering disciplines, including electrical and manufacturing engineering
- Mathematics, physics and the applied sciences
- Health professions and related fields
Because designation is set at programme level and can change, confirm the status of a specific programme with the International Office before putting it in writing for a family.
How to explain it without overpromising
- Separate eligibility from outcome. A STEM designation makes a student eligible to apply; it does not guarantee a job or an extension.
- Talk about the employer market, not just the rule. The campus sits between Austin and San Antonio, two metropolitan employment markets — that proximity is what turns eligibility into internships.
- Set the timeline honestly. Career preparation starts in year one through campus career services, not in the final semester.
- Never quote approval statistics you cannot source.
A useful question for shortlisting
Ask the student: "If you could not work in the United States after graduating, would you still choose this subject?" If the answer is no, the shortlist needs work — motivation built only on a work permit tends to produce unhappy students. If the answer is yes, a STEM designation is a genuine bonus rather than the whole plan.
