Funding the I-20: Financial Documents That Pass First Time

An I-20 cannot be issued until the university is satisfied that the student can fund their studies. In our experience this single step causes more delay than transcripts, English scores and application forms combined — almost always for avoidable reasons.

What the university is checking

Three things, in order:

1. Is the amount sufficient to cover the first year of study and living costs?
2. Is the money clearly available — liquid, accessible, and evidenced by an institution that can be identified?
3. Is the relationship clear between the account holder and the student, where the funds belong to a sponsor?

A clean document set

• An official bank letter or statement on the bank's letterhead, dated recently, showing the account holder's full name, the currency and the available balance.
• A sponsor letter where the funds are not the student's own: who the sponsor is, their relationship to the student, and a clear statement that they will fund the studies.
• Supporting identification for the sponsor where required.
• Consistent name spelling across every document and the passport.

The mistakes we see most

• Balances shown in local currency with no exchange indication, leaving the reviewer to guess whether the threshold is met.
• Fixed deposits or property valuations submitted as evidence of liquid funds.
• Statements older than the accepted window, submitted again after a delay without being refreshed.
• Multiple accounts adding up to the requirement, with no covering explanation.
• Screenshots from mobile banking applications instead of an official statement.

Preparing sponsors in your market

Sponsors are usually parents or relatives who have never prepared documents for a foreign university. A short, market-specific briefing from your team saves weeks:

• Explain what "official" means in this context, and that a bank teller's printout may not qualify.
• Give the sponsor a written list, in the local language, of exactly what to request from the bank.
• Ask for documents to be issued in English where the bank can do so.
• Check the pack yourself before it goes to the university — a five-minute review by an experienced counsellor prevents most rejections.

After the I-20 is issued

Remind the student that the same documents will be needed again at the visa interview, and that they should keep originals available. Consistency between what the university saw and what the consular officer sees matters.
