Ten Mistakes That Delay an I-20 — and How to Avoid Them

An I-20 is issued once the university has an admitted student, a complete file and satisfactory evidence of funding. Delays almost never come from the university's side alone. Here are the ten problems we see most often, in the order they typically appear.

Before the application

  1. Name mismatch. The application name does not exactly match the passport. Everything downstream inherits this error.
  2. Wrong date format. Day and month reversed on a date of birth causes a mismatch that must be corrected manually.
  3. An email address the student does not check. Use the student's own address, not a shared agency inbox, or important notices are missed.

During assessment

  1. Incomplete transcripts. A final-year certificate without the accompanying grade record.
  2. Uncertified translations, or translations that omit stamps and signatures present on the original.
  3. English score sent to the wrong institution, or reported unofficially when an official report is required.

At the funding stage

  1. Insufficient documented funds — the balance covers tuition but not living costs.
  2. Sponsor relationship unexplained. Funds in a third party's name with no sponsor letter.
  3. Stale documents. A bank letter issued months earlier, resubmitted without being refreshed.

After issuance

  1. Waiting to pay the SEVIS fee. The fee must be paid and receipted before the visa appointment; students who delay it lose their appointment slot.

A five-minute pre-submission review

Before any file leaves your office, check:

  • Passport name, spelling and order match every document.
  • Every scan is complete, straight and legible, including stamps.
  • Funding is above the requirement, in a named account, recently dated.
  • English evidence matches the requirement for the specific programme.
  • The student's own contact details are correct and monitored.

Agencies that run this review consistently see files clear without a single follow-up email — which is the real measure of a well-run admissions desk.
