Health Insurance for International Students at TXST: Requirements, Costs and Using the Student Health Center
Healthcare in the U.S. is very expensive without insurance — a single emergency visit can cost thousands of dollars. That is why Texas State University, like most U.S. universities, requires F-1/J-1 international students to hold health insurance for the duration of their studies.
The university plan
On enrollment, international students are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan offered through TXST's insurance partner, billed with tuition each term. Expect roughly $1,800–$2,400 per year (about $150–$200/month), adjusted annually. It meets visa requirements and covers doctor visits, emergencies, hospitalization, mental health and prescriptions.
You may request a waiver with comparable alternative coverage — but travel insurance bought at home usually does not qualify.
Student Health Center on campus
TXST's Student Health Center has physicians, nurses, a lab, immunizations and a pharmacy right on campus. Students book online; visits are low-cost or free thanks to the medical fee included in tuition. It's your first stop for minor illness, health forms or vaccines.
Mental health
Academic pressure and homesickness are normal. TXST's Counseling Center offers free, confidential counseling, with groups specifically for international students.
Vaccinations before departure
TXST requires students under 22 to have a meningococcal vaccine within 5 years before enrollment — get it at home and bring an English certificate. Complete the standard series (MMR, Tdap, Hepatitis B) and keep your vaccination record.
Tips to save on healthcare
- Go to the Student Health Center first — far cheaper than outside clinics.
- Use the emergency room only for true emergencies; for minor issues after hours, choose urgent care.
- Bring clearly labeled common medicines (cold, stomach, allergy) — enough for the first year.
