Working as an International Student at TXST: On-Campus Jobs, CPT and Up to 3 Years of OPT

“Can I work while studying in the U.S.?” — Yes, within F-1 visa rules. Knowing the legal employment options lets you earn, gain experience and open the door to working in America after graduation.

1. On-campus employment

F-1 students may work on campus up to 20 hours/week during the semester and full-time during breaks, with no extra authorization. Common TXST roles: Alkek Library assistant, dining services, the Rec Center, teaching/research assistant, department offices, IT help desk, campus tour guide. Pay starts at the Texas minimum wage and up (~$10–$15/hour).

2. CPT — paid internships while studying

Curricular Practical Training lets you intern at outside companies (Austin, San Antonio…) when the internship is part of your curriculum (a credit-bearing internship course). It must be approved by the international office before you start. TXST's position in the Austin – San Antonio tech corridor is a major advantage for business, engineering and IT internships.

3. OPT — working after graduation

Optional Practical Training allows full-time work in the U.S. for 12 months after graduation in your field. Graduates of STEM programs (Computer Science, Engineering, Math, many analytics-focused business degrees…) get a 24-month extension — 3 years of OPT in total. This is the gateway to H-1B sponsorship.

What you may NOT do

• Work off campus without CPT/OPT (including restaurants, delivery, or online freelancing for U.S. clients).
• Exceed 20 hours/week during the semester.

Violations can cost you your F-1 status. Always check with TXST's International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) before accepting any job.

SSN — Social Security Number

To be paid you need a Social Security Number. With an on-campus job offer, ISSS issues a support letter for your SSN application at the San Marcos Social Security office — typically 2–4 weeks.
