English Requirements Explained: IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo and the TSIE Pathway

English is where most agents lose students — not because the requirement is unusually high, but because families are told too late that a retake is needed. Texas State University offers a direct-entry route and a pathway route, and knowing when to use each is the difference between an enrolment and a deferral.

Direct entry scores

For undergraduate admission, the published minimums are:

• IELTS 6.5
• TOEFL iBT 78
• Duolingo English Test 105

Graduate programmes use comparable thresholds, and individual departments may set a higher bar for their own applicants. Always confirm the requirement for the specific programme before promising a student that their score is sufficient.

When the score is not there

Students without a qualifying result are not out of options. The TSIE intensive English programme, together with online ESL study, allows a student to begin at Texas State University and progress into the degree programme once the required level is reached — without submitting a new application.

This route suits three groups in particular:

• Students whose academic profile is strong but whose test date is too late for the intake.
• Students who have never sat a standardised English test and would need months of preparation.
• Students who want time to adjust academically before starting credit-bearing coursework.

Advising borderline cases

If a student is within half a band of the requirement, you have a decision to make, and it should be made early:

1. Retake now, not later. Book the next available sitting rather than waiting for the result of a preparation course.
2. Prepare the pathway in parallel. Treat the English pathway as plan A alongside the retake, not as a consolation prize after a failed attempt.
3. Be honest about the cost of delay. A student who misses Fall and enters in Spring loses a semester of progress; a student who enters through the pathway does not.

What to tell families

Parents often read a language pathway as a sign that their child is behind. Reframe it: the pathway is a structured start inside a United States university, with campus access, student support and a defined route into the degree. Framed that way, conversion improves noticeably.
